31 July 2009 Fonda Chooses a Davida for 40th Anniversary

When Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper set off in search of “America” in ’69, Hopper went for a beat-up old hat to complete his gear whilst Fonda opted for the now iconic Captain America/Stars and Stripes open-face Jet. What they found out there (freedom, insights and some harsh truths amongst other things) was to have a profound influence not only on audiences but on film-making itself. The ideas of freedom both literally and artistically in Easy Rider created the “New Hollywood” and it would never be the same again. At the same time it seemed to sum up the conflicts and contradictions of the counter-culture and the changes that were sweeping the States.

Cut to 40 years later, scene: The Goodwood Festival of Speed, Fonda is putting in a time on the hill climb on a replica of that bike that went down the blacktop back in ’69, alas the original bikes will probably never be found although one was restored and resides now in a museum. This time round however he opted for a Captain America Jet helmet hand-made in England by Davida U.K a company that specialises in high quality, open-face helmets with lush colour schemes and designs, often bespoke. Their creations are very much inspired by the same notions of freedom that Easy Rider so resonantly expressed and of course they are very proud that Peter chose to wear one of their helmet for this anniversary celebration of one of the most important films not just for motorcycling but for so much else besides.

14 July 2009 The Dumb Way Round - Tormod Amlein and Klaus Ulvestad

“Now more ambitious, crazy and risky than ever!.......we ride our usual two 1937 Nimbuses with sidecars,  there’s minimal support along the way. .... all the way around The World. ..... we’ll ride from Norway through Siberia to Alaska, then down through North and South America. A boat will take us to South Africa from where we’ll ride up to Europe “.

Setting off in early April, we gave Tormod and Klaus a Davida Classic  each and said keep in touch. We’ve been following their Blog  for 3 months through Russia and Kazakhstan. On the 11th July they were robbed and this may be their last entry.

First and foremost I’d like to congratulate somebody in Kazakhstan with his/her new HP Elitebook 2530, which is a very good and quite expensive lap top. Also, I assume this is one of the first lap-tops in Kazakhstan with Norwegian keyboard so take good care of it. Unfortunately BIOS is locked with my fingerprint, so please contact me and I will send my finger by mail

As this is the famous last blog entry, here’s the plan for the future. First we’ll go to Burabay for the festival this weekend, then back to Russia for a couple of days. We’ll reach Mongolia probably mid or late next week/ The crossing of the Gobi Dessert will take place as some of the first thing we do in Mongolia, and total travel time here will be 10-15 days, a distance of about 2200 kilometers before coming back to Ulan Ude. From Ulan Ude we go west to Lake Baikal, and then east to Vladivostok. ETA Vladivostok is late August and we’ll try to get airfreight from Japan or Korea to Anchorage.

Tormod has put his email and telephone number in the blog if you wish to contact them.  http://www.kccd.no

21 May 2009 Rat and Survival Rally, 11-12th May,Taddington, Derbyshire

Apart from painting your bike the flattest, mattest,  meanest shade of black, organisers of the Rat and Survival Rally, The Rat Bike Zone says Rat Bikes are the " ultimate distillation ........ don't fix it unless it's broken..........do minimum to keep them healthy...let it wear its visual history with pride...no..cleaning, polishing, washing or adding shiny parts.....So a perfect place for Fid The Lid.  Who might have been one of the few there to spot this Honda 900 still attached to a swinging arm MADE BY DAVIDA IN THE 1980's !

"Rats have been part of our history cos my bikes are always solid matt black and used in the Davida photoshoots since the 1980's ... we've got a few of my Katanas, Exups and BMs scattered around in various parts of this website. I've never been to a Rat Rally before. It was full of great brains and resourceful people.Go." - Fid The Lid.

14 May 2009 TEAM CAMERON Harry Perrey Trial 2009

This is Rob and Andy at it again Classic Sidecar Trial Racing

The Bike : - Ariel Red Hunter Chassis/swing arm registered 1956 with Ariel 500cc bottom half of engine and rigid rear hub. Rest is bits from various bikes, including Matchless, Burman, Norton, Suzuki, BSA, Bultaco, Harley Davidson, Triumph.

For anyone not familiar to sidecar racing the driver kneels in specially shaped kneeler trays when racing, as well as the passenger moving from side to side the driver needs to adjust his body lean to assist the passenger with weight distribution both going round left and right hand corners. The passenger’s job needs to be very precise, sometimes quick and smooth all at the same time. An experienced passenger steers the sidecar 49% and the driver 51%, a good sidecar passenger will know exactly how to passenger each corner by the speed or line a driver enters a corner, they can also get a sidecar “out of trouble” if the driver has made a mistake!!

This weekend we are off top the Cotswolds for the 3rd round of the British Championship.  http://www.cameronracing.co.uk

7 April 2009 John and Fiddy on their Hayabusas

The man with Davida MD, David Fiddaman aka 'Fiddy',  is John Fincher. John came up to our Liverpool workshop on his Hayabusa to collect another helmet. He has many. He says " It's the best for that bike". That's a totally independent opinion.

Fiddy said "I just had to take a photo. The Hayabusa is a fabulous bike, but together they make an amazing image. Majority of riders would not even experiment with a Davida Jet on a modern missile let alone a Hayabusa."
